Get Your Words Out Post: January

I'm trying to do a better job of keeping track of my writing this year. Last year I wrote 201,725 words, which was the most I had ever written, according to Ao3.  This year I signed up for [community profile] getyourwordsout at the 200K (basic) level, which isn't any higher than what I hit last year, but given my school schedule is going to kick up a lot in March and work continues to find me overworked, I wasn't going to sign up for anything bigger than what I did. Maybe next year.

Overall, I wrote 35,782 words so far this year, which is about 17.5% of my goal. This means I have a bit of a buffer going forward, which is good, because I have two finals in February and work continues to be really hectic. I really need to get back into a schoolwork frame-of-mind, because I've def been neglecting it a bit.

Also, its an excuse to do pretty spreadsheets. SPREADSHEETS.  Here's wot I worked on in January; if its blacked out in the picture, it's something that is for an exchange or a fic-a-thon that hasn't been revealed/posted yet.

Things I didn't count for future-me: anything for the 3-Sentence Ficathon (some I may turn into longer things), anything for [community profile] classiclitclub

Underneath the cut, thoughts on stuff I worked on, and stuff I should have worked on, but did not, in fact, work on.

Shame Corner, aka Stuff Wot I Should Have Written But Then Did Not, and Now Future-Me Must Be Shamed For:
  • I did not work on my Hadestown NaNoWriMo monster of a fic. Self - you wanted this done by April. You worked so well in November on this, cooled off but were at least still touching it in December, and then didn't touch it at all in January. Bad. You need to do the work on this, and you gotta stop being bummed about it just because your story-grid spreadsheet highlighted how shit you are at pacing.
  • Work on writing out a rough outline for your original thing! You're forgetting it before you've even started!
  • Remember when you said you were going to do a much better job of documenting media you've done experienced, Ace?  You're not.
  • Remember when you said you were gonna be way more active on DW? You're not. Please fix, ya digital hermit.
  • Work on that Yakuza/Tekken crossover before you forget what 1980's japan looks like.
  • Should write out some DBH ideas before you forget them entirely.

Stuff I Did Work On, and Individual Memories/Evaluations/Wot I Have to Say:

  • To Make an Omelette (Sometimes One Must Break a Few Eggs) - Star Wars:TOR fic for Darth Zash and Darth Nox/Sith Inquisitor.   Written for [personal profile] kimaracretak, despite her not signing up for that exchange (mysteriously — I  blame the Sith!). If I have an excuse to write Sith lords doing a mischief, I always will. Probably the lightest fic I will write this year that involves exsanguination and decapitation.
  • And Found It Sweet - written for [community profile] holly_poly. My first Star Trek fic! Set in Deep Space Nine. I've always had a soft spot for Keiko and I really fell in love with Bashir while writing this. Was a little nervous about writing it and when I got the pinch hit, it was quite late so it was written very quickly; a bit afraid to look back, but I do like it. Got to review the episode about Julian's genetic manipulation for it, which is such a good/painful thing that I wish I had more time to dwell on and made me want to watch more Star Trek.
  •  On the eve of the dawn of the last day of Matrinalis, 9:44 Dragon - written for [community profile] holly_poly. Epistolary Cassandra/Cullen/Adaar Inquisitor. Recip seemed to like it and I'm glad. Fond of the twist I did on this one, with Shokratar being the Adaar inquisitor's sister, as well as the boss of her kith. Again, written late and fast and under the same circumstances as above, so I'm a bit afraid to look back but my feelings at present are generally positive.
  • Ceasefire - written for [community profile] holly_poly .This one might be my first X-Men fic I've posted? I'm not sure. I have a few mostly-drawer fics for this fandom I haven't finished, mostly because I only tend to write in the Original Movies timeline. (Nothing against the Alternate set, but I prefer Mystique, Charles, and Erik being older and having done a lot of shit that puts them all at odds.) Delighted I got to write for my OTP in this series (Charles/Erik/Mystique), who are hard to find requests for; written in the same circumstances as the other two, so I'm a bit afraid to look at it, but I really enjoyed writing this one.
  • Untitled - Demeter noodling on a writing exercise posted on [community profile] getyourwordsout , trying to get a grip on writing from her perspective, not at all because I get frustrated that so many H/P media make her a villain (and surely it's so much more fun/painful if all three are sympathetic?) Not sure if it'll ever go anywhere enough to be published, especially since I can't even be bothered to make a title for it.
  • 3 censored ones in a row - All different attempts at writing my [community profile] chocolateboxcomm assignment. You can see it took me a long time to settle on one, and I'm not entirely certain, still, that I settled on the right one. I'm not sure if the other two will wind up being published or not, but since one is on politics in that world, there's a better than average chance that that one will get published on Ao3 at some point or another. The longest one will probably go down by a good 4K  as a lot of that is just me trying out different scenes of [X] until I found one I liked....but I don't like to delete alternates until I finish a first draft. Which I haven't.
  • A Strange Flower, Suitable for Any Occasion - Started out at as a 500ish word ficlet on three sentence ficathon; thought I will edit this a bit to put it on AO3, and then it was suddenly over 5K with no end in sight. I blame how fun Rhea is as a character. Rhea is really fun to write with because she is so old and knows so much more than any other player in this story, and yet she herself is in many ways an unreliable narrator, because of course there's all the damage she and her kids have from Chronos' uh...cannibalistic tendencies. (Note to self:     Does this mean that the titanomarchy is technically canon, underage, non-consensual incest vore? POSSIBLY.)
  • Last censored one - a fill for the Dark fem-slash ficathon going on at [personal profile] fiachairecht 's journal here. Has been a challenge to write so fingers crossed I can finish this one quickly.
  • Because I Could Not Stop for Death (He Kindly Stopped for Me) - Hadestown fic. Probably the only Orpheus-focused fic I'll ever write, though it'll also  be about Hades being a right bastard in every sense of the phrase. I only have 100 words written for this so far, but I deeply love every one of them:
When Death shows up on Orpheus’ door, hat in his hand, Orpheus at long last does what he has wanted to do for the past sixty-seven years: he decks Death, full across the face.

“Hm.” Hades cracks his neck and chuckles. “I suppose I deserved that.”

“I suppose you did.”
