Movies I want to Watch in 2022
(This is part of a series I'm gonna do this week, detailing Things I Want to Experience this year: books to read, plays/shows/movies to watch, games to play, music to listen to, etc. These lists are by no means exclusive and being a flighty creature it is likely I either won't get to all of these items or may wind up reading other things instead of/in addition to the ones listed below, but I'm gonna try to get to these and want to look back at the end of the year and see how successful I was at getting through these things.
Base rules on this project: No more than 10 things can be listed. Series can be listed as Series in order to not tie up the entire list with multiple entries. Experiencing at least one thing in a series will count as fulfilling the item. If it's something I started in 2021 but did not finish, it will be put on the list as Continuing: [Name]; otherwise, the item is new to me.
Tick Tick Boom: I’ve heard exactly one song from this, “Green, Green Dress”, never saw the show somehow, and all I know is that a) this is a musical and b) it’s gotten good reviews as far as musicals go, in a year that didn’t happen a lot of them. It feels like it has a LOT of cameos I’d enjoy at the very least...
Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans (is this technically a series?): Look, I have never seen these movies. I do not think Liam Nieson or Ralph Fienes was well cast. But the first movie has the INSANE SPARKLY ARMOR that inspired a brief internet meme before we called it that, and the second movie makes the insanely weird choice of going: you know what? Let’s make a movie all about Hades’ daddy issues, because somewhere in the Midwest, there’s a bitch who is clambering for that, and she will go see it. And lo their plan failed for I did not realize there was a sequel to a movie I never watched, and lo I had not seen it, but I have heard of it now and I feel a weird obligation to see it because honestly there will never be another movie focused on Hades and Cronus relationship pretty much ever again.
Annette: You will probably look at this and you will probably go ah she wants to see it for Adam Driver. And no, I don’t want to see it for Adam Driver. I want to see it because this thing is bonkers. It has a puppet baby!!! It’s a musical! It’s a musical with the guy from Star Wars and a puppet baby.
Brown Girl Begins – Somehow there was a movie prequel to Brown Girl in the Ring that was made in Canada?? It came out four years ago and evidently barely landed in America? Anyway young girl in the Caribbean becomes a reluctant priestess to save her people and that is exactly the sort of trope I am here for.
The Fear Street Trilogy: I loved these books as a kid but I barely remember them now, which I suspect is exactly the right amount of nostalgia to have to go into this. I like my horror hokey and vaguely incesty and I kinda think the Fear Street Trilogy had both?
Werewolves Within: Horror-comedy is just about my favorite genre when it’s done right. This has gotten good reviews for a videogame adaptation (which, I have not even heard of the videogame, so I was as surprised as you to see that when googling for a link) and I’m basically hoping it’ll scratch that “Shaun of the Dead” vibe.
The Matrix series: Years ago I only watched Part 2. Then I saw the first one, finally. Then I watched half of part 4. Now I feel like I kinda oughtta watch 3, the Animatrix, and the other half of four. Hopelessly dated in a lot of ways (gotta get a phone call so you can get on/off the internet!), but the leather aesthetic is still fun to me and honestly, I just think these movies tend to be pretty. Eventually want to watch it to write about Persephone portrayals in media so might as well be this year.
The Green Knight: I heard this was trippy and fun and Dev Patel is quite cute. I would have watched this earlier but I’ve been waiting until it goes onto streaming services, which I imagine will happen this year. I really enjoyed the original poem in college but to be honest I have no clue how you could adapt this to modern audiences easily.
Hustlers: Sometimes, you wanna see a girl’s heist movie! And sadly I don’t think there are that many, and I’ve already seen Widows (excellent, you should watch it) and Ocean’s Eight (also fun). I don’t know a lot of the plot behind this beyond Strippers Stealing Cash from Johns, but also, I am here for strippers stealing cash from Johns.
The Handmaiden: It has lesbians and a fucked up uncle/niece relationship with BDSM, so it seems like something I’d be interested in seeing doesn’t it? The only problem being, I think, that this looks kind of intense, and 2021 wasn’t a Great Year for Intense. But I’m hoping to stretch a bit in 2022, and I’d really like to see this.
