This is part of a series I'm gonna do this week, detailing Things I Want to Experience this year: books to read, plays/shows/movies to watch, games to play, music to listen to, etc. These lists are by no means exclusive and being a flighty creature it is likely I either won't get to all of these items or may wind up reading other things instead of/in addition to the ones listed below, but I'm gonna try to get to these and want to look back at the end of the year and see how successful I was at getting through these things.

Base rules on this project: No more than 10 things can be listed. Series can be listed as Series in order to not tie up the entire list with multiple entries. Experiencing at least one thing in a series will count as fulfilling the item. If it's something I started in 2021 but did not finish, it will be put on the list as Continuing: [Name]; otherwise, the item is new to me.

Continuing: Star Trek: TNG + Star Trek: DS9: I really like the Star Trek I’ve seen, but I got to season 7 and didn’t want Star Trek: TNG to end, so I’ve been paused on the last few episodes for like five years now. I think its time to open it up, to go ahead and let it end. I paused DS9 somewhere in the 4th season but I’d like to finish it as well.

Continuing: Discovery of Witches: This is so much better to me than the books it was based on, and it really gained a lot in the translation and most of that is that they really went all out with giving people outside the main pairing a lot more camera time and it’s really done a much better service of building out the whole world instead of just the Matthew/Diana story. I’ve seen all of Season 1, bits of Season 2, and I am hoping to catch up in time to see Season 3.

Ghosts (BBC): I’ve seen most of the American Ghosts with my parents and it was a really cute little show, with a woman who inherits an old mansion and, after suffering a near-death experience, also inherits all the ghosts that live within it. I didn’t know there was a BBC version, but I’m eager to see it!

Xena: I’ve seen this in bits and pieces over the years, but never really seen the whole show. I only know a few things about the final seasons of it: it’s got lesbians, it’s got Ragnarök-but-Greek-sorta, and it got super fucking weird and these are all things I’m down for. Plus I’d like to actually know enough of this to be able to request/treat for this in exchanges at some point since it actually pops up every once in a while.

Continuing: Ted Lasso: I’ve got a free apple trial and naturally I binged this and I just have to say I love Roy and Keeley and lovely Sam with all my heart. I’m def going to finish season 2 and hopefully make it to season 3, though I’ll probably have to pay for it for a bit.

Underground Railroad: I really want to see this one! I liked the book this is based on – about a runaway slave in the 1880s, and a more-literal-than-usual underground railroad. It’s a book that avoids some of the uncomfortable slavery porn that seems to pervade a lot of attempts to write about this period, but it also doesn’t shy away from showing how ever-fucking-present slavery and the threat of being caught as a slave was. Also, Amber Gray’s in this, and I want to see her break my heart again.Read more... )

Tick Tick Boom: I’ve heard exactly one song from this, “Green, Green Dress”, never saw the show somehow, and all I know is that a) this is a musical and b) it’s gotten good reviews as far as musicals go, in a year that didn’t happen a lot of them. It feels like it has a LOT of cameos I’d enjoy at the very least...

Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans (is this technically a series?): Look, I have never seen these movies. I do not think Liam Nieson or Ralph Fienes was well cast. But the first movie has the INSANE SPARKLY ARMOR that inspired a brief internet meme before we called it that, and the second movie makes the insanely weird choice of going: you know what? Let’s make a movie all about Hades’ daddy issues, because somewhere in the Midwest, there’s a bitch who is clambering for that, and she will go see it. And lo their plan failed for I did not realize there was a sequel to a movie I never watched, and lo I had not seen it, but I have heard of it now and I feel a weird obligation to see it because honestly there will never be another movie focused on Hades and Cronus relationship pretty much ever again.

Annette: You will probably look at this and you will probably go ah she wants to see it for Adam Driver. And no, I don’t want to see it for Adam Driver. I want to see it because this thing is bonkers. It has a puppet baby!!! It’s a musical! It’s a musical with the guy from Star Wars and a puppet baby.

Brown Girl Begins – Somehow there was a movie prequel to Brown Girl in the Ring that was made in Canada?? It came out four years ago and evidently barely landed in America? Anyway young girl in the Caribbean becomes a reluctant priestess to save her people and that is exactly the sort of trope I am here for.Read more... )

Continuing: Judgment series: This is a series with two games, and I’m somewhere around Chapter 4 of the original game (Judgment). I need to refresh myself on the plot (and am debating starting over because I only remember some of it), but then I’m looking forward to the continuing adventures. Doubt I’ll beat both games (Lost Judgment is still too new to go on deep discount yet, when I usually buy my games), but I’d love to finish Judgment this year.

Continuing: Hades: In a lot of ways, if I were ever going to have a game custom-made for me, that game would have been Hades: set in ancient Greek mythos with a focus on my favorite area of it, family-focused, lets you be a bisexual short king. I’ve gotten to the point where there isn’t a lot of content left in the game and I’m doing the Thing I Do where I go “I should preserve this for later” but I really want to power through it and actually finish it so I can write more fanfic in this universe.

Continuing: Yakuza series: I finished Yakuza 0 in 2020 and it was pretty much the only game I finished that year! I’ve picked up several games in the series since in PlayStation sales and I would like to at least finish Yakuza 1 this year. I’ve heard it’s both exciting and sad and I’m both excited and dreading that. Majima and Kiryu both own my heart in different ways, and even though the series sometimes makes me grimace, it's also a lot of fun and strangely heart-moving. I don't tend to like mafia movies but it turns out I sure do enjoy Yakuza games.

Unavowed: I loved the two games in the Blackwell series I’ve played from this studio and I’ve been in the mood for a point-and-click. I saw a 30 minute preview of this one on Giant Bomb I think, ages ago? It looks so good. I love how this studio’s games tend to be on the shorter side so I’m hopeful I will actually finish this one. It looks like a fun urban-fantasy/crime focused game, and while that genre is popular in lit (and I've read a lot of it), it's not so usual in games and I'd really like to see where this goes.

Continuing: Blackwell series: I really loved the first two games in this series; I kinda ship Joey and both the Blackwells? (I mean, not at the same time, obviously.) I have three to go and am looking forward to playing them. I would like to finish at least 1 in 2022. Thankfully, these games are kinda short, so I might actually have a chance of clearing them: I think most of these can be finished in 3-6 hours which is a very adult-friendly play-time.

The Grishaverse series Leigh Bardugo: It took me by surprise how much I enjoyed the TV show for this. I had the first books in this series (and the first two books in Six of Crows) that I bought when they were on sale, prior to the final books release. I’ve noticed a lot of the fanfic for the TV fandom mixes and matches canon with the books, so to really write in this fandom (and I’d like to), I think I gotta read the book. So let’s read the book(s)!

Working on a Song
Anais Mitchell: I am probably the only Hadestown obsessive on Earth who has not yet read this, and I really should. I’ve been avoiding it because I’ve been Saving It For a Bad Day, but honestly, I really need to stop that mindset. I can always re-read it. Might get some good ideas for fic out of it.

The Book of LifeDeborah Harkness: I read the first two books in this series and dropped off before the third. I didn’t particular like the books, but I really like the TV show (which, for the most part, cut the chaff, and boy howdy did these books have a lot of chaff mixed in with truly fun worldbuilding). Before the third series comes out, I’d like to read the third book, especially because I think the third season will deviate quite a bit from the original book.

A Touch of Darkness series Scarlett St. Clair: Is this a Hades/Persephone modern AU romance novel? Yes. But look, I need some simple, easy books, and this is fun.  I enjoy that it’s got some nifty, fun world-building (gods having secret horns! Arcane magic! Secrets!). I finished the first novel but there’s a second and third now so I’d like to finish it.
