2. Of course, [community profile] snowflake_challenge started as well :D Never too late to jump in if you'd like to, it's a chill challenge like that! I knew I wasn't going to do it this year either, but thought "maybe next year"..... however it's January 3rd and I'm already fighting to keep up with my reading page because I met SO MANY OF YOU COOL PEOPLE through the challenge, and you're participating again haha :D It's really a great way to get to know people a little bit before the friending meme that usually happens at the end of it. I can't recommend it enough if you'd like your reading page to be more lively.

Snowflake Challenge: A warmly light quaint street of shops at night with heavy snow falling.

3. I'm going to link again to this AO3 PSA from a while back. It's titled "Protect Your Contact Information From Scammers" but it's interesting in that it describes the format that spam comments take nowadays: first a paragraph that seems genuinely related to your story (thanks and fuck you, genAI), then an invitation to reach out to them because they want to make a comic from it, or help you give more impact to your story, or whatever cue to take you off-site.

The post also offers a step-by-step template for reporting registered accounts that do it, and I gotta say it's effective as the account I reported yesterday was removed in less than 24 hours. (Also, those comments are annoying always, but they sting extra on fics that you know from the start won't have much/any audience. Curses on your potatoes, spammers!!)

(Having said that I don't think the spambots have figured out the "Uncategorized Fandoms" section yet as I haven't gotten any of these on K-9 fic -- if you hate spam comments you should totally join us there XD)

Theme: crack treated seriously, crossover, casefic, unconventional format

Summary: Harry hits Light Yagami with his car. (Based on a joke post, taken extremely seriously.)

Reccer's Notes: Murder mystery where Harry Du Bois investigates a murder he himself committed, putting him right in the middle of the Kira case. Very funny! The dialogue is perfectly in character, the art is fantastic, and I love how the entire fic is told in the style of the game.

Content Notes: major character death (Light Yagami is dead), graphic description of corpses similar to that of Disco Elysium canon

2025 Fic Roundup

Total Words Published at end of year:
19,763, which is a massive drop from last year's roughly 103k, which was already a drop from 2023's 162k. Normally I don't even include unpublished work, but the Ancient Arlathan Double Agent AU, which I started publishing and then withdrew, is more than double the word count of everything else I wrote this year combined, so it seemed silly not to include it.

Fandoms: DA mostly--which flickered and died as the disappointment from Veilguard really set in. I published or finished up a few Tolkien fics which had already been in the works and dropped a second chapter of a five year old Mass Effect fic. In spite of my ongoing love affair with Baldur's Gate, I simply haven't felt the urge to write anything for it.

Highest Everything (raw kudos, hits, comments):

  • Hits: One Morning (of Several) on the Citadel (914)
  • Kudos: One Morning (of Several) on the Citadel (84)
  • Comments: By Invitation Only (4)

New Things I Tried: N/A

Fic I Spent the Most Time On: Undoubtedly the Double Agent AU, which I still never got to a place I was satisfied with. It just became unwieldy and I realized it was going to take a lot more time to get it to a place I was happy with than I was willing to invest, so I shelved it.

Fic I Spent the Least Time On: Bonafide which was just some silly pseudo-political Elronduil make-out banter,

Favorite Thing I Wrote: I don't really feel strongly about any of this year's product, but the second chapter of One Morning probably is my favorite.

Favorite Thing(s) I Read:

  • Pray for Rain by mafalda_157 - Back in ancient Arlathan, when Elgar’nan is on the precipice of declaring himself god, he and Solas clash over what constitutes good leadership.
  • The Wolf, Bruised by bitterling - The Dread Wolf expected this. But he had hoped to be summoned, or to be found in private… yet it seems that the All-Father relishes these public displays.
  • A flash to the sun, the golden close of love by @adler-obsessed - “Darling Cassandra, do sit down before your legs give out. I do not want my rooms to become the site of a holy pilgrimage, where devotees pray at the resting place of Divine Victoria.”
  • Last Exit by macbethisms - The funeral of Esen-Temur, with live commentary.
  • As Little Might be Thought by our_ourobos - Given his first taste of freedom, Elros pushes the limits.
  • Queen of Peace by astardanced - Csethiro broke abruptly free of the pack and came sweeping towards him with hands outstretched, probably hoping to do damage control. “Serenity,” she said, ignoring her father, who seemed to be wanting to prompt her like a conductor. “We are honoured to have you here.”
  • All Your Sisters Wanna Fly by astardanced - an heir for the ceredada, at long last.
  • Unembittered by Arveldis - Findis makes a last entreaty.

Writing Goals for 2026: Find some inspiration...it is clearly lacking.

+ Two days into the new year, two episodes into season 1 of The X-Files. I know we all agree Gillian Anderson is hot stuff, but are we talking about it enough?? Also, I remember being very annoyed at Scully's reluctance to believe in the supernatural as the show went on, given how much she'd experienced by then, but WOW does she have the patience of a saint in the beginning. Mulder is lucky he's cute. Also also, they really did smoosh these two together like a pair of dolls they wanted to kiss right from the start. Shippers must have been eating the wallpaper by episode five.

Can't wait for less UFOs, more bizarre horror cases.

+ Went to the local mall with my mom today, and I am now the proud owner of a 50% off memory foam pillow. Fingers crossed I vibe with it.

+ While my mom was looking for things for her calendar, I happened to spy a shiny new hardback of Mona Awad's Bunny, with funky pink bunny endpapers and sprayed edges. And so, silly me, with the goal of reading my damn physical books, came home with yet another physical book. Le sigh. At least I'm 98% sure I will vibe with this book something fierce.

+ Just did the final tagging for the last check in post of [community profile] rec_cember. I'll be tallying the recs and fandoms covered tomorrow but spoiler: it's A LOT. If you're looking for something to read, I highly recommend having a look at the tag set. We got a really good variety.

+ Stranger Things has finally ended. I feel like they yanked Nancy out of the fic I recommend a couple of days ago and shoved her in there, and that was endlessly amusing. I just sat there squinting at it for a minute, going full headtilt. They very much indulged in a lengthy wrap-up that some will hate and others appreciate very much *cough* fandom *cough*. The final battle was extremely 80s. Also, what was the costuming department smoking? I am saving this quote for later. )

+ It's Snowflaking Time yay!

Fuck. CVS is out of COVID tests, but I picked up cough drops and loratidine, per [personal profile] rahaeli, on the assumption that this is covid; between the cough and the general sense of recognition, I am pretty confident in my self-diagnosis.

R. is shipping me tests and some other stuff, because she is a fucking saint. I am changing back into my jammies and finishing this pot of tea and going back to bed. Ugh.

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I'm Ren, I'm in my 40s and a parent, I'm non-binary, married to an American, we live in Wales. I was born in Coventry but have lived in Wales for most of my life (and my grandfather was Welsh).

I have two kids, age 9 and 5, both idetinfyings as girls atm. Flower is all about lego and Tabby is all about cats (and well, Tabby).

I'm not really into a fandom atm, not in the way I used to be when I was younger. I tend to write and bootle about in whatever show I'm binging at the time, though Stargate remains my fave. I do write orignal stuff as well. I want to write more this year, more of everything, I haven't been writing as much as I used to.

I loved doing the challenge before and wanted to do it again, plus I thought it would be a good way to connect and try to un-isolate myself. I tend to be pretty insular nowadays, both on and offline. Between the anxiety and the kids and my physical health (firbomyalgia), I haven't done much outside of go to work. I started archery last year and started writing again though.

I have a longer about me for my friends list here.

Happy to have more friends on here!

Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Length: 43626 words

Theme: crack treated seriously, epistolary, no canon required, outsider pov

Summary:

I've recently been unexpectedly promoted to lead a department in my organisation, wrote the anonymous emailer.

As there was no one working here when I arrived, my manager, who is head of the organisation, had promised me the choice of my own assistants. However, without warning, he simply presented me with an additional assistant. This new assistant’s first act on his first day was to let a dog into the office. It took several hours to catch and clean up after this dog and it has only been downhill from there. I admit I'm not entirely sure what to do with this assistant now I'm stuck with him. I'm hoping you have some advice?

Kind regards,
New Manager

Abigail Bailey runs a successful management advice blog. One frequent contributor is from a workplace with some... issues.

Reccer's Notes:
The Magnus Archives is a horror audio drama in which the main character starts a new position as archivist in an organization named Magnus Institute that specializes on investigating strange/magical phenomena. Very soon, strange things start to happen to him too. Also, it turns out that his workplace itself is ... not what you could call safe.

This story starts with the idea that the main character writes to a management advice blog about the strange things about his workplace, and becomes a regular writer. The fanfic is told in the form of this advice blog as it could appear on the internet: We get the mails he writes in, and the bloggers answers, and also the comment section. It's hilarious, but also it's taken so seriously as the story progresses and gets darker.

As an outsider POV, it really brings out how horrible the whole Magnus Archives story really is. It also shows very well how the story starts so inconspicuous and then boils the characters in horror like a lobster it a pot - and in this fanfic, the character doesn't event write to the advice blog about what's actually happening (because of secrecy), only the workplace safety circumstances. It's such a fascinating outsider POV.

Since it doesn't expect any canon knowledge, it can be read fandom-blind. Even without fandom-knowledge it's a hilarious and tragic advice blog story and in my case, it was my intro to the story, which I listened to after finishing this fanfic, so it was great advertisement for The Magnus Archives. (Note that it contains out of context but significant spoilers if you're going in fandom blind. For me this added to the re-read factor of the fanfic.)

Content Notes:
  • depictions of outrageously bad workplace safety
  • (canon-typical) dysfunctional interpersonal relationships
  • lighter on the actual supernatural horror than the original canon
  • out of context (but significant) spoilers if read fandom blind

Feeling a lot more confident and happier now that Narumi also showed up. It's surprising how much easier I find it to write such a little clown of a character.

...perhaps because I, too, was actually a clown all along? 😮🤡

Warm as life | Kaijuu No. 8 | Kafka/Reno/Narumi, Reno/Iharu, Kafka/Hoshina | 3.8k words (WIP, 2/7) | rated M
