(This is part of a series I'm gonna do this week, detailing Things I Want to Experience this year: books to read, plays/shows/movies to watch, games to play, music to listen to, etc. These lists are by no means exclusive and being a flighty creature it is likely I either won't get to all of these items or may wind up reading other things instead of/in addition to the ones listed below, but I'm gonna try to get to these and want to look back at the end of the year and see how successful I was at getting through these things.

Base rules on this project: No more than 10 things can be listed. Series can be listed as Series in order to not tie up the entire list with multiple entries. Experiencing at least one thing in a series will count as fulfilling the item. If it's something I started in 2021 but did not finish, it will be put on the list as Continuing: [Name]; otherwise, the item is new to me.

Continuing: Judgment series: This is a series with two games, and I’m somewhere around Chapter 4 of the original game (Judgment). I need to refresh myself on the plot (and am debating starting over because I only remember some of it), but then I’m looking forward to the continuing adventures. Doubt I’ll beat both games (Lost Judgment is still too new to go on deep discount yet, when I usually buy my games), but I’d love to finish Judgment this year.

Continuing: Hades: In a lot of ways, if I were ever going to have a game custom-made for me, that game would have been Hades: set in ancient Greek mythos with a focus on my favorite area of it, family-focused, lets you be a bisexual short king. I’ve gotten to the point where there isn’t a lot of content left in the game and I’m doing the Thing I Do where I go “I should preserve this for later” but I really want to power through it and actually finish it so I can write more fanfic in this universe.

Continuing: Yakuza series: I finished Yakuza 0 in 2020 and it was pretty much the only game I finished that year! I’ve picked up several games in the series since in PlayStation sales and I would like to at least finish Yakuza 1 this year. I’ve heard it’s both exciting and sad and I’m both excited and dreading that. Majima and Kiryu both own my heart in different ways, and even though the series sometimes makes me grimace, it's also a lot of fun and strangely heart-moving. I don't tend to like mafia movies but it turns out I sure do enjoy Yakuza games.

Unavowed: I loved the two games in the Blackwell series I’ve played from this studio and I’ve been in the mood for a point-and-click. I saw a 30 minute preview of this one on Giant Bomb I think, ages ago? It looks so good. I love how this studio’s games tend to be on the shorter side so I’m hopeful I will actually finish this one. It looks like a fun urban-fantasy/crime focused game, and while that genre is popular in lit (and I've read a lot of it), it's not so usual in games and I'd really like to see where this goes.

Continuing: Blackwell series: I really loved the first two games in this series; I kinda ship Joey and both the Blackwells? (I mean, not at the same time, obviously.) I have three to go and am looking forward to playing them. I would like to finish at least 1 in 2022. Thankfully, these games are kinda short, so I might actually have a chance of clearing them: I think most of these can be finished in 3-6 hours which is a very adult-friendly play-time.

Okay, I have not done well on keeping to this. There are various excuses as to why -- works been heavy, time has been short, I've falling back into my shell, most unhappily --but it is now June 28th, and I am going to post the gigantic amount of not-very-much stuff I've consumed over the last few days, and post June's later because frankly this is long enough as it is all its own and I can't imagine anyone would read it besides me (but that's fine, of course). Will post June's much shorter list at-some-point, hopefully before I combine a bunch of months together, and try to do more personal posts/actively be active instead of just disappearing again. At least combining these three months under quarantine seems appropriate since it basically feels like March 31st over and over again, if unseasonably warm now.

One of my new years resolutions was to keep track more of what I’m reading/writing/watching/playing/listening to (a media diary basically). And as you can tell given that it is now 2/1, that has not been going swimmingly.

So to try to make up for lack of time, here’s all of Jan!

What I Read/Am Reading: I finished making my way downtown through An Introduction to Roman Religion by John Scheid. I’m not entirely sure if it lives up to being an introduction: it pretty much throws you into ancient roman society and hits the ground running )

My library loan request for How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell also came in so I finished that. At first an amusing book, then a heavy one, then an absolute drag )

I also read The Queen of Flowers and Roots by “Io” (translated by Rosemary Dawn Allison); this is another romance novel retelling of Hades & Persephone, with some cool imagery and novel concepts )

What I Wrote/am Writing: Deeeep in the weeds on WNSO + Chocobox )

What Shows I Went to See: I went to see three shows in January: Brief thoughts on Phantom of the Opera, Mean Girls, and Lindiwe )

What I Watched/am Watching: The only things I’ve watched thus far in January is the final seasons of the Good Place and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (this one might have been late Dec – I am not sure at this point). TROS was rather …disappointing, to me, and I feel like all the reasons why have been Discoursed on the Internet to death, so I will just say I appreciated the hamming of Ian MacDiarmid and Actual Solid Acting from Adam Driver, the rest was a solid meh-to-below-meh, and I’ll move on.

The Good Place – I’m less sure about how I feel about it. I loved Season 1 and 2, but Season 3 felt like the walls were closing in on what was left for the show and this season appears to be mostly shooting us down the runway toward the end. There are parts of this season I’ve loved, but the last episodes seemed to mostly be an info dump, and TL;DR - I feel that the last few episodes re more infodumps than entertaining and I'm not happy about [[spoilers]] )

What I Played/am Playing: I played Bastion over the Christmas to New Year’s break, a short game that mostly asks How Do You Move On, After the World Ends? )

I started Judgment, the Yakuza spin-off, and am having a lot of fun with it, though I haven’t booked a lot of hours on it. So far, the main character, Yagami, fucked up and accidentally let a murderer go free to murder again as a defense attorney; he’s judged as basically an accomplice in Japanese society and making his money running shitty detective jobs instead, like documenting deadbeats who are stiffing their bills and, if necessary, giving them a beat down. Gameplay-wise it’s pretty much Yakuza, but with Ace Attorney’s interface painted on top. I like both of those things, so I like this game!

The Yakuza games tend to be the most m/m heavy ship-generators for me, and this spin-off is no exception )

What I Listened to/am Listening to: Pretty much ¡Spangled! Over and over. I’m in love with Gaby Moreno’s beautiful voice and the lyrics are so bittersweet and that is my trap, the bittersweet music. The first song, Across the Borderline, is both politically relevant and one of the most heartbreaking songs: When You reach the broken promised land... )
