Belated Reading Wednesday
Jan. 8th, 2026 08:27 pmtroisoiseauxMy goal for 2026 is to re-read War and Peace, which I originally read... approximately ten years ago? (At some point between discovering Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 in 2015 and seeing it on Broadway in October 2016.) Started on January 1st and have been reading at least one chapter per day— as the individual chapters are (so far) very short, I haven't gotten very far, but enough to remind me that a. Tolstoy was just so, so good at writing characters who feel like people, and b. Pierre is such a doofus, I love him. If I had a nickel for every 19th century novel where someone fails to read the room and starts praising Napoleon, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but etc. etc.
I saw a fantastic production of Guys & Dolls (the STC's) over the holidays and now I'm reading the collected short stories of Damon Runyon, which were the basis/inspiration for the 1950 musical. Off to a fun start from the first sentence of the first story; my mental narrator's voice can't decide whether it's an old-timey radio host or in The Godfather:
(This particular story ends with Dave the Dude getting beat up by his girlfriend's boyfriend's wife, by the way.)
Also just started The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin; immediately intrigued and enjoyably bewildered by being flung headfirst into its alien setting.
I saw a fantastic production of Guys & Dolls (the STC's) over the holidays and now I'm reading the collected short stories of Damon Runyon, which were the basis/inspiration for the 1950 musical. Recently I was referring to a friend the tabletop RPG "René, le jeu de rôle romantique"
It's a French RPG about playing Romantic poets (and others), you can play it parodic or serious, the rules had made me laugh a lot when I was young. Regularly I'm in fandom where the characters are Overdramatic, and I think: you should be made into a René character.
I thought it was long lost!
But no, it still exists on the Internet! dates from February 2000

As it's in French, for people who want to have a laugh, I want to summarize the character creation:
* Your three Attribute are your Rage, your Despair and your Inimical Old Age (your age, basically)
The first two change all the time, if they go too high they decide if you comit an act of madness/commit suicide.
* In addition to attributes, you roll 1d10/2 (round up) to know the number of your Problems, and then you roll into a big Problem table.
Are you a poet? (if so you have a minimum time writing or telling poetry every day). Are you naive? Homosexual? Republican? In love with a family member? Short? Obsessed with the occult? Badly dressed? An ecclesiastic? The list is... not exactly ensless but it's fun.
* All skills or powers are optional and give additional problems
* Last character creation step: choose an element of your character that flutters in the wind (hat, scarf, coat...)

Maybe it’s a project that needs multiple pairs of hands to make it work, maybe it’s a long-term quest to save the world that’s going to require a lot of people and a lot of skillsets, or maybe it’s as simple as a cat that needs at least two people to corral her into a carrier to go to the vet; whatever it is, it’s going to need some people to work together. How are your characters at working together? Does it come naturally to them, or do they struggle? What are they working together for? Write a story about working together. If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting! |

Some of this is copied from previous letters, and I am also happy with what I asked for in my previous letters. I am very easy to please. Think of the prompts as vague suggestions to get your ideas flowing. As a rule, as long as the relationships I request are the focus, I’m going to be thrilled with whatever you come up with. I have received some wonderful gifts for many of these requests in the past. If I am requesting them again, it only means I am greedy and want more! (Seriously, go see my Gifts page. I have been spoiled rotten!) Don't read into some requests being longer than others. For some things, my entire request can be boiled down to, "Pretty! Want!"

That said, I will leave the comments open to anyone who wants to prompt me for a drabble in a fandom I know or for original concepts. I will, however, screen them.
Format something like "Fandom/Character(s)/Simple Prompt" or "Original Genre/Character Archetype(s)/Simple Prompt". Include your name on AO3, SquidgeWorld, Ad Astra, or CFFA if it is fannish and you want it gifted.
We Will Persevere.
